RSV Prevention Guidelines in KSA

The Public Health Authority (Weqaya), in collaboration with its specialized committees, has reviewed and updated the National Immunization Schedule for Children and Adults. The update reflects the latest scientific evidence and approved recommendations aimed at strengthening protection against vaccine-preventable diseases.
A key addition to the updated schedule is the inclusion of RSV-mAb “Nirsevimab” for the prevention of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection in infants. Under the new recommendations, a single dose of Nirsevimab will be administered to all infants born during the RSV season, which in Saudi Arabia extends from October through March. Immunization will begin two weeks before the start of the season and continue until its conclusion.
The recommendation also covers infants younger than eight months of age entering their first RSV season, except for those born at least 14 days after their mothers received the RSV vaccine during pregnancy. In addition, children aged 8 to 19 months who remain at increased risk of severe RSV disease, including those with certain underlying medical conditions such as congenital heart disease, will continue to be eligible for protection.
This update represents an important milestone in enhancing infant health and reducing the burden of RSV-related hospitalizations, reinforcing Saudi Arabia's commitment to evidence-based preventive healthcare and improved childhood immunization coverage.
