DIAGNOSIS IMPACT

The survey findings are generally in line with scientific literature, which highlight that receiving an autoimmune T1D diagnosis can be very difficult, and that children and parents may exhibit psychological symptoms such as distress, stress, anxiety, guilt, and depression when they are told that they have a chronic condition.1-6 Such feelings are evidently more strongly felt, if the person who is diagnosed has experienced more severe symptoms or complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).5-7

It is found that early detection of individuals at risk of developing autoimmune T1D – prior to onset of symptoms – may help to prevent traumatic DKA through blood glucose-monitoring. Early detection may also allow for a gentler and safer transition to life with autoimmune T1D, as it can provide time for those who are affected by the diagnosis to learn about what it requires to manage a chronic condition.7-10
