“I love the half-life, and for the next week I get to focus on living my life.”
Time to switch
Everyone with hemophilia A has their own goals. Mine was time. Less time infusing and more time with my son. And through the research I did and discussions I had, it was clear ALTUVIIIO could have a potentially large and positive impact on my daily life. With once-weekly dosing, it would allow me to infuse less than the medication I was on at the time, so that led me to talk to my care team about switching.
The importance of good dialogue
Knowing the brand and quality, I was curious and hopeful about making the switch. But I wanted to make sure it was right for me. Fortunately, my doctors, care team, and community are all great about having open, honest dialogue with these types of decisions. There have also been times when I’ve described myself as fine or “OK,” but realized there was more to discuss. We don’t know what we don’t know, and it takes great communication with everyone around you to realize that and to get to a better place.
Handling the switch
When I switched to ALTUVIIIO, I was in close contact with my care team before and after the first few doses. I would say we were in contact every other day, making sure things were working as planned. I had a few appointments as well. Everyone on my team has had such a positive impact on me.
Loving the results
ALTUVIIIO hasn't just lived up to my expectations, it's gone beyond them. I love the half-life, and for the next week I get to focus on living my life. I feel confident doing all the things I enjoy doing. And in addition to the medication, I have my care team to thank. They always treat me as ME, not a number on a chart. They know me well, and I trust them to help me work toward the healthiest life possible.
Treat the person, not just the disease
I would encourage all healthcare providers to really talk to the person they’re treating. Get to know the person. Learn what’s important to them. Think about how a switch in treatment could benefit them. Building that trust and providing safe treatment are very important. Don’t just consider what’s in the charts or studies showing how treatment helps others. Everybody is different. Consider how it’s going to affect the person in front of you.
